Braylon Edwards Player Bio

Braylon Edwards Player Bio/Best Cards

Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, Marvin Harrison, and Chad Johnson. These are some names of wide receivers that any football fan would know. In the past few years though, there has been one receiver who has been creeping up to this elite status and his name is Braylon Edwards, wide receiver for the Cleveland Browns. While the receivers I named are getting older and older, Edwards is young and fit to be the next superstar at wide receiver after Moss, Owens, Harrison, and Johnson retire.

Braylon Jamel Edwards was born on February 21, 1983 in Detroit, Michigan. As a child, Edwards was very well exposed to football because his father, Stan, played football at Michigan University (1977-1981) and went into the NFL and played for the Houston Oilers (1982-1986) and the Detroit Lions (1987). Edwards attended Bishop Gallagher High School in Harper Woods, MI. He played football for three years and he ended his high school career with 63 receptions for 740 yards and eight touchdowns. Edwards also played many other positions, including running back, quarterback, free safety, cornerback, linebacker, defensive end, tight end, kick returner, punt returner, and long snapper. Edwards set a school and state record for most positions started in one year with 11 different positions. In his high school career, Edwards rushed four times for 152 yards and two touchdowns. Edwards also completed 10 of 12 passes for 200 yards. On the defensive side of the ball, Edwards recorded 170 tackles, seven sacks, 10 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, three recovered fumbles, five interceptions, and one interception return for a touchdown. Edwards also ran track and played basketball in high school.

Coming out of high school, Edwards was ranked No. 49 receiver in the nation by Rivals.com. Edwards was also ranked No. 20 player in the state of Michigan by the Detroit Free Press. Edwards decided to follow in his fathers steps and attend the University of Michigan. In Edwards’s college career, he played in 44 games and started 36. In those games he played in, he managed to set new receiving records for Michigan. In his 3 years of starting football, Edwards racked up 252 receptions for 3,542 yards and scored 39 touchdowns. His 252 receptions beat the previous school record by 76 receptions (previous record was 176). His 39 touchdowns beat the old record of 37 set by Anthony Carter. Edwards also became only the third player in NCAA history to gain 1,000 or more receiving yards in three straight years. Edwards also set a school record with 17 career 100+ receiving yards games. In Edwards’s senior season, he was awarded the Biletnikoff award (nation’s best receiver) and the Bo Schembechler award (Michigan’s MCP). He was also named the Big 10 Player of the Year and named an All-American. Edwards also ran track at Michigan.

In the 2005 draft, Edwards was projected to go very high in the first round and with the third pick overall, the Cleveland Browns selected Braylon Edwards. When Edwards came into Cleveland, he was projected to be the first or second receiver, but a hold out caused him to miss training camp and he was placed as the third receiver. Edwards made his NFL debut on September 11th against the Cincinnati Bengals. In that game, he caught two passes for 16 yards. Edwards started the next week against the Green Bay Packers and in that game, Edwards caught three passes for 108 yards and an 80 yard touchdown reception. Edwards played one more week before finding out that he had a staph infection which caused him to miss two weeks. Edwards finished his rookie season with 32 receptions for 512 yards and three touchdowns.

Edwards started the 2006 season as the Browns second receiver but after an injury to Joe Jerevicius, he was named the number one receiver. Early in the season, Edwards recorded back to back 100+ yard receiving games against the Bengals (110 yards) and the Ravens (116 yards). Edwards ended up recording only one more 100+ yard game that season (137 yards against the Steelers) and he finished the season with 61 receptions for 884 yards and six touchdowns. At the end of the season, Edwards announced that he would give $500,000 to the University of Michigan for a scholarship fund. On May 15th, Edwards pledged $1 million in college scholarships to high school students in Cleveland who kept at least a 2.5 GPA throughout high school.

Edwards was named the #1 receiver for the Browns for the 2007 season. Edwards’s first big game of the season came in week two against the Cincinnati Bengals. In this game, Edwards racked up 146 yards on eight receptions and scored two touchdowns. For the next two weeks, he scored one touchdown in each game. In week five against the New England Patriots, Edwards caught six passes for 110 yards. Week six was another big week for Edwards. He caught five passes for 67 yards and scored three touchdowns. Week seven was the Browns bye week, and in week eight against the St. Louis Rams, Edwards came back to play. Edwards caught eight passes for 117 yards and scored twice. Five weeks later (week 13) against the Arizona Cardinals, Edwards had seven receptions for 149 yards and one touchdown. Edwards finished the season with 80 receptions for 1,289 yards and 16 touchdowns. Edwards’s 1,289 receiving yards broke the Browns previous record of 1,236 set by Webster Slaughter in 1989. Edwards’s 16 receiving touchdowns also set a franchise record, beating the previous record of 13 set by Gary Collins in 1963. Edwards was ranked second in the league in receiving touchdowns behind only Randy Moss who set an NFL record with 23 receiving touchdowns. Edwards was named to his first Pro Bowl and is the first Browns receiver to be named to the Pro Bowl since Webster Slaughter in 1989.

Do you use Sport Sunglasses?

July 17, 2008 By: admin Category: Other

NFL Sunglasses

Let’s talk about protecting your eyes! There are a lot of athletes or people that play sports/work out that do no use sun glasses. Whether you are playing tennis or another out door sport, sport sunglasses should be important part of your sporting attire. This is especially true if you play sports at peak sunlight hours and for long durations.

Not only is it important to wear sunglasses, it is important to wear sunglasses that provide your eyes maximum protection from the sun. You should also look for sun glasses that have been developed to fit your head for the sport you are playing in. Research has shown that radiation from the sun increases the likelihood of certain cataracts (loss of transparency in the lens). Cataracts diminish the eyesight of millions of Americans and causes billions of dollars of eye surgery each year. Wearing sunglasses while outside could prevent cataracts, skin cancer and degeneration of the macula.

So, what are the best sport sunglasses? Sunglasses that Block 99 to 100 Percent of UV Radiation and provide 99 to 100 percent UVA and UVB protection.

Brett Favre; More Selfish then Terrell Owens?

July 15, 2008 By: Sean Category: NFL General

The man, the myth, the legend, or something far less? Brett Favre is dragging the NFL through a circus right now with his immature and crybaby actions.

Dear  die hard Packer fans, I apologize if you are grieving or upset in this time, but ultimately…Brett Favre needs to shutup. If you are emotional in this time of your Packer life, please don’t continue to read, because this article is going to explore the numerous reasons why i believe Brett Favre is the single most selfish, snobby, and one of the worst team players there is out there today. If you thought TO was bad, Favre is worse in my opinion.

Has Favre done great things on the football field? Yes, no one can deny that. Do I like Brett Favre, for the most part, yes. I like Brett Favre the down and dirty, gritty QB, that has no hesitation to try and make any throw. However, the person; the all about me attitude; the need to be in the spotlight primadonna attitude; is too much. Brett will go down in history as one of the top 3 QB’s to ever play the game, but he has lost the respect of a lot of people after everything that has transpired over the past few days.  However, his recent actions and words to the Packers and coming back from retiring is not the only reason I call Brett Favre selfish.

Favre has called out teammates time and time again, after missing blocks, running the wrong patterns, dropping a ball; have these players made mistakes, yes, but teammates play for each-other, and if one makes a mistake, teammates look to lift them up or come together and be stronger, not point out their weakness or call them out for it.

Favre is known for one of the most ridiculous plays in NFL history. In 2001, Favre flopped to allow Michael Strahan to set the single season NFL sack record. If you recall, before that play, Favre briefly spoke with Strahan, the next play, Favre rolls right to Strahan and flops to the ground. Now, this is something I can almost guarentee the Packers offensive line vowed to before the game, to not allow Strahan to break the record on their watch. However, Favre had no interest in what his teammates would give up.

In 2005, when Aaron Rodgers was drafted, Brett Favre came out and said that it is not his job to mentor or teach Aaron Rodgers. While, I am sure most starting players are bitter when their replacement is drafted, I haven’t heard anyone else come out and say they would not support and help the younger player drafted behind them. This is potentially the most selfish and arrogant thing an athlete can say in my opinion.

Consider these things, along with Favre’s circus of on again/off again drama each season about not being ready to play, and now calling out the Packers for being in the wrong for how they handled everything. Brett needs to realize the world does not revolve around him and his decision and when he is ready to make it. The Packers run a professional football team, and that he cannot wait until a week before training camp to let them know his plans. They need to know before the draft, before free agency, and before OTA’s so that they can prepare with or without him. For Favre to hold the Packers hostage and not give them answers is just another act of selfishness. In my opinion, Favre will go down as one of the most selfish players in the history of the game.

What Teams Could use Brett Favre?

July 12, 2008 By: admin Category: NFL Player News

Brett Favre Leaving Green Bay?There are lots of reports out there that Brett Favre may be looking at ending his retirement to leave the Green Bay Packers to join another team as a starting quarterback. Apparently, Favre contacted Packer management last week and their response was, “we have moved on.”

Can you really blame Green Bay? Favre retired and Green bay has been preparing for the 2008 season with Aaron Rodgers their 2005 NFL draft pick (24th pick overall and second quarterback selected). Rogers has sat behind Favre for 3 years and has earned a lot of money holding a clipboard. I’m sure the Packers are ready to get a return on their investment and prepare for the future. Even if Favre was to return to the Packers how many years would he play?

Green Bay has three options; let him come back to the team as the starting quarterback, release Favre or trade him. So, what teams would be interested in Brett Favre?

Atlanta Falcons - Most people don’t know that Favre actually started his career at Atlanta before being traded to Green Bay. Yes, I know the Falcons picked Boston College’s Matt Ryan, but he is in no way ready to start. Favre could play two years in Atlanta and groom Ryan for the pros.

Miami Dolphins - Miami hasn’t had a quarterback since Dan Marino. Two guesses who broke many of Dan Marino’s records? Chad Henne could be the future, but he won’t be ready for two years.

Detroit Lions - Let’s face it John Kitna has had top wide receivers coming to him out of the drafts for years now and Detroit has performed terribly. Could you imagine Favre throwing to Roy Williams and Calvin Johnson?

Arizona Cardinals -  Matt Leinart has been a disappointment and Kurt Warner can’t stay healthy. Much like Detroit, Arizona has two of the best tandem wide receivers in the NFL with Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin.

San Fransisco - I don’t see Favre going here, but the 49ers are desperate for a quarterback.

Chicago Bears - Two words; Rex Grossman. Would there be a better team since the Bears play Green Bay twice a year?

Other teams needing a quarterback: New York Jets, Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens.

Do I think Brett Favre should come back? No! It will be too weird seeing him in a non-Green Bay Packer uniform. Are there lots of teams that could use him? Absolutely!
